Season 2019 - Billy Bishop Goes To War

Billy Bishop Goes To War by John Gray and Eric Peterson

Directed by Dean Patrick Fleming

“Billy Bishop Goes to War is a delightful–and cunningly wrought–work of art.” – New Yorker

Billy Bishop Goes To War premiered at the Vancouver East Cultural Centre in Vancouver in 1978. The original production toured across Canada, and also was staged in Washington, both on Broadway and off-Broadway in New York City, at the Edinburgh Festival, in Los Angeles and at the Comedy Theatre in London making it one of the most widely produced plays in Canadian theatre.

The two-man musical play dramatizes the life of Canadian World War I fighter pilot Billy Bishop through song and story.

“Billy Bishop is a high-flying ace of a show, capturing the humour, the hellfire and the daring-do of an extraordinary career … The score is filled with vintage replicas of the kind of songs that sent men rushing in–and out–of battle.” – New York Times

Dean Fleming had a mental check list at the ready when he settled in to sift through mountains of plays to select the works he wanted for his first season at the Hudson Village Theatre.

As HVT’s new artistic director for professional theatre, Fleming had been asked to select two plays, but once his reading marathon was over, he presented them with four. Tickets are on sale now.

Two are booked for the summer, one is scheduled for just before Remembrance Day and one is being saved for February, 2020. The title of the February play is being kept under wraps for now.

“I am excited by the idea of producing throughout the year,” Fleming said. “I think we have the audience for it.” Read more… Read more…
