Savannah Sipping Society’s exploration of friendship and loss attracts director Ellen David

Film, television and stage actor and director Ellen David wasn’t familiar with American playwrights Jessie Jones, Nicholas Hope and Jamie Wooten until she sat down to read their comedy The Savannah Sipping Society. She laughed.

David directs the Hudson Village Theatre production of The Savannah Sipping Society, which runs from July 4-22.

The playwrights — known as Jones Hope Wooten — have written a long list of popular comedies that have been produced more than 5,200 times for more than 37,000 performances. The Savannah Sipping Society alone will be produced dozens of times in Canada and the United States, through 2019.

“It’s a bit Golden Girls, a bit Sex and the City,” David said. “It’s about women coming into their own.”
